Goldfrapp - Strict Machine. Does everything B*****e wants to do, but fails to, on 'Naughty Girl'. An update rather than a wearily sexless recapitulation of Donna Summer's aching, effortless cyberoticism.
Posted by mark at May 10, 2004 12:49 AM | TrackBackI totally agree. Machine porno soundtrack. And the video's great -- like this weird cross between some Stevie Nicks fantasy and Neil Jordan's THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, all thanks to the magic of Adobe After Effects.
Posted by: Joshua Ellis at May 10, 2004 01:46 AMOh dear god yes. That and "Train".
It feels very early 80s, in the best nylon static fashion.
Wish I hadn't lost my copy of "Black Cherry" now.
Posted by: Daniel Byron at May 10, 2004 02:45 AMYes yes yes, I absolutely adore "Strict Machine". One of the best pop embodiments of the "schaeffel" beat too, for those of us who care about such things.
Honestly, I think I've agreed with you about everything lately Mark! Except for the Eamon song, which I absolutely loathe.
Posted by: Angus at May 10, 2004 07:31 AMI find Goldfrapp a bit too chilly to be honest. Deliberate coldness vs unintentional coldness - neither do much for me.
Posted by: Tom at May 10, 2004 09:39 AMthis is kinda okay. the ewan pearson mix of it is fabulous, though. one of the gayest-sounding hi-nrg electrohouse tracks i've ever heard and all teh nbetter for it.

Posted by: Stelfox at May 10, 2004 10:12 AMI love "Strict Machine" but isn't it a bit unfair to compare Goldfrapp's finest moment with one of Beyonce's most average?
BTW You should really track down Goldfrapp's excellent cover of "Yes Sir I Can Boogie" - it's like a deliberate attempt to salvage the Madonna/Mirwais aesthetic!

Posted by: scott at May 10, 2004 02:35 PMIt might be unfair, Tim, if Beyonce had anything to offer BUT average moments (with one notable exception)... The pt was about what can be done with a Moroder-Donna Summer vibe, that was the basis of the comparison...
Posted by: mark k-p at May 10, 2004 03:13 PMone un-average moment?
that's kinda unfair.
Posted by: scott at May 10, 2004 03:42 PMHow many un-average moments did Donna Summer have? ;)
Posted by: Tom at May 10, 2004 04:51 PMDonna Summer - un average moments?
More than her fair share.
"I Feel Love" is still the pinnacle of 20 century pop music for me.
Posted by: Daniel Byron at May 11, 2004 07:59 AMsorry mark can't go with you on this one; humourless gary glitter retread by overrated session singer who if she loves herself any deeper will end up making herself pregnant.
