ALL STYLES SERVED HERE

Marcello confirming once again, if there was any doubt about it, and in spite of everything else, what a good writer he is. (Not sure I agree with the idea that 'an Eng Lit student of Fitzwilliam' couldn't make a spelling mistake, however.)

the sycophantic backslapping in belated effort to regain favour is almost as woeful as the original argument. That Nick Drake 'piece' is awful writing: unstructured, winsome, meaningless ramblings. Yes, this kind of rerelease is a venal, sordid indictment of the way the industry commodifies art. it hardly needs saying, but you'd hope that if it is pronounced upon the writer would attempt to find a more interesting way of getting his message across than these lazy, idle doodlings.

Funnily enough, Jay, I'm not 'trying to regain favour'; I would have linked to the piece anyway, and it would have been mere petulance to refrain from doing so on the grounds that Marcello has removed me from his links bar. I've never made any bones about the fact that I, like anyone who enjoys serious and informed writing about music, enormously appreciates Marcello's work. Witness my recent comments when he said he was thinking of stopping blogging. If there's 'sycophancy', it's a longstanding thing, not something dreamt up to curry favour with him. I'm in many ways as pugnacious and combative as him. But the simple fact is, Marcello has inspired me to check out many things I'd never previously heard of or had previously overlooked. So I'll continue to relish his writing and continue to link to it. Whether I 'regain favour' does not affect that one jot.

Needless to say, I disagree absolutely about the piece; I think it's exceptionally well written. But, as we know, Marcello is more than capable of defending himself.
